Welcome to the Scandinavian Community Centre

ICCBC Genealogy Centre and Resources

At one point or another, most of us want to know about our family history. Maybe it is because we look like a great grandparent or share a name with others. Family history contributes to who we are and where we are today. We often embark on our search for our roots after those with first-hand knowledge are gone. Many of our grandparents or great grandparents were ættfróð, that is, they were knowledgeable about their family tree and those of others.

Today, it is possible to reclaim that personal family history knowledge through many types of resources.

At the Iceland Room of the SCC, we have a collection of genealogies, census records, biographies, district histories and other reference material that can be useful in rebuilding that knowledge of your history. In addition, we have microfilm of the BC Vital Events, a microfilm reader and printer. There is wireless internet throughout the building and a photocopier available.

There are many on-line resources that can contribute to building your Icelandic genealogy including census records and newspaper publications. While most resources are in Icelandic, we can assist you in accessing that critical information.

Our club’s Genealogy Centre is established to encourage people of Icelandic heritage to find out about their forebears. This centre is established for you to use whether you are a novice or experienced researcher.

The Scandinavian Cultural Society holds regular monthly genealogy sessions at which time you are welcome to check out your Icelandic genealogy or by contacting us at icc_of_bc@hotmail.com for a time that suits your schedule.

Some people refer to genealogy as a hobby but it is more than that, it is mental exercise, entertainment and an important part of our cultural heritage.
