As did so many other Norwegians, Kris arrived in Canada – to his aunt and his cousin Raymond Bardsness in New Westminster, BC – as a young man with boat building training. Raymond – whose father trained both him and Kris, was already working in the field and introduced Kris to job opportunities.
As a Master Boat Builder, Kris went on to make a name for himself working in the ship building industry on a wide variety of vessels – more than 100 – including fishing vessels that continue to ply our BC waters.
In 2000 he led volunteers to build the Viking Ship Munin that sailed out of Heritage Harbour for 15 years and now is showcased at the Scandinavian Community Centre.
Kris is a long-time member and supporter of local Norwegian organizations including: NHS, Sons of Norway Choir and Viking Lodge, Nordlandslaget, past Board Member at Normanna Care Home.
He often lent his skills, with other volunteers, to special building projects, including the Stav Church style gazebo at Normanna and the Viking Bar at the Scandinavian Community Centre.
His story is part of the much bigger, though largely undocumented, Canadian-Norwegian history – especially the boat building industry in BC.
We encourage you to join us and help share our history. Please feel free to invite others – including friends in the fishing and boat building industries!
