Norwegian Language Classes

Norwegian language instruction is offered by the Norwegian House Society. As we will hopefully see British Columbia move into Phase 4 of the BC Restart Plan for COVID-19 on September 7, 2021, we are planning to hold classes beginning in September in person at the Scandinavian Community Centre. If we are not able to hold in-person classes, we will continue with Zoom-based instruction.

Weekend Viking Warriors

On Sunday, September 12, 2021, we are hosting an afternoon of Norwegian language and culture at the Centre. This fun day is designed to interest a broad spectrum of people who want to learn a little, eat some good food, and have fun in a relaxed setting. Maybe you want to travel to Norway or you want to dip your toes into the Norwegian language before signing up for an adult class. No experience with Norway or Norwegian required! Planning is still underway, but if you are interested, please email NorwegianClassesSCC@gmail.com. Cost will be minimal.

Adult Classes

Adult language classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels all take place one evening per week from 7-9 pm at the Centre. The advanced class will be on Tuesday nights, while details for beginner and intermediate classes will be announced soon. Taking language classes gives you a year’s membership in the Norwegian House Society and is a gateway to the many cultural offerings at the Centre.

  • Fall Term: September – December 2021
  • Winter Term: January – March 2022
  • Spring Term: April – June 2022

Classes focus on speaking, listening & comprehension, reading, and writing, along with discussion of Norwegian life, culture, and history. The aim is to move students from complete beginner to fluency as they progress from one level to the next. The following textbooks are used:

Textbooks are supplemented in class and for homework with other resources including audio and video. Textbooks may be purchased from Amazon.ca or from the Centre at the first class.

If you are interested in classes, please email NorwegianClassesSCC@gmail.com with the following information:

  1. Your name and telephone number
  2. Your current knowledge of Norwegian
  3. Which level you would like to be placed (we can help you decide)
  4. Why you want to learn Norwegian, and what goals you have once you do
